Madagascar Est : Massif du Marojejy, Ambodifiakarana, 1 600 m, XIII-1958
(P. Griveaud), 1 male, holotype, GS 5886.
A distinct, deviating species judging from the genitalia : with shorter socii and cha-
racteristic aedeagus.
Plutographa tomion, spec. nov. (fig. 31, 63)
Female 17 mm. Head and scape of antenna white, faintly touched with cinereous, flagellum
fuscous. Labial palpi long, sinuate, appressed to face, posterior half porrected, median segment
thickened with dense hair-scales, terminal segment long, smooth and slender, acute; median seg-
ment fulvous-brown with a horizontal white postmedian band, terminal segment white. Thorax white,
ferruginous laterally, with submedian lateral outwardly concave marks, crescentic, narrow and fer-
ruginous; tegula ferruginous, glossy; metathorax glossy pale grey. Abdomen glossy pale grey-
fuscous, venter white.
Fore wing oblong suboval, truncate, costa curved throughout, apex moderately rounded, ter-
men slightly sinuate above, rounded below, slightly oblique. Glossy ferruginous-purple, markings
extended purplish-white, pure white on dorsum. Costa with five larger and thick pairs of trans-
verse strigulae, slightly obscured by purplish with a distinct gloss ; first pair preceded by a concolo-
rous round spot, strigulae becoming gradually shorter and more oblique posterad ; three ultimate
pairs with lower ends interconnected by slight glossy and pale greenish-anthracite suffusion, for-
ming a rather large patch in disc at and beyond 3/4, emitting a straight thick line to dorsum, on
the way forming inner edge of ocelloid patch ; a similar short line is its outer edge ; a large irregular
white mark, inwards-oblique, in centre of glossy anthracite patch, becoming suffused and less bright
apicad; a pair of rather irregular white streaks from below anterior tip of white mark, descending
to dorsum beyond middle ; a large white patch along basal third of dorsum, from just beyond base,
including a deep purple subcircular well defined spot anteriorly and incompletely cut by two or three
purple lines posteriorly ; these lines disappearing in centre of the white patch ; central half of disc
forming a large triangular deep purple patch along dorsum to below costa, top with an extension
to middle of costa ; ocelloid spot large, from above middle of wing, below filling out tornus. Cilia
(imperfect) dark purple with a pale basal line along upper half, white along lower, and around tornus.
Hind wing glossy light bronze. Cilia fuscous (damaged).
Female genitalia. Sterigma simple, lamella postvaginalis : a simple transverse band, its lower
edge narrowly sclerotic, with median third slightly projecting downwards ; a pair of small punctu-
late papillae flanking ostium. Colliculum short, subsclerotic, strongly constricted in middle, edges
thickened and hyaline. Ductus bursae rather short. Corpus bursae ovoidal. Only one signum dis-
cernible : a semisclerotic slender horn, simple, without basai plate.
Ile Maurice (Mauritius Island), forêt Macabé, 13-111-1952 (P. Viette), 1 female,
holotype, GS 2609.
A gaudily marked distinct species, with long acute labial palpi. The generic posi-
tion is not quite certain without the evidence of the males.
