MEMORIES OF PROFESSOR EUGENE SEGUY
Rokuro KANO
Tokyo Médical and Dental University,

On November 15, 1968, I arrived at Paris, France and spent two days, Monday,
November 18 and Tuesday, November 19 at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle.
The main purpose of my visit was to meet the great dipterist, Professor Séguy. Before
leaving for Paris, I had written to him to say that I very much wanted to see him. After
a while I received his reply in which he said that, as he was very aged, he was not sure
he could keep the promise but he was looking forward to seeing me when I arrived in
Paris. I went to the muséum before 8 o'clock in the morning of November 18, when
it was still dark. A lady, in the security room, opened the door for me and took me to
a display room, where I looked at the spécimens on display while waiting. Dr. Loïc Matile
appeared somewhat later. He was the successor to Professor Séguy and a specialist of
Fungivoridae. He took me to a room which had been reserved for me and told me where
the spécimens of Macquart, Pandellé, Meigen and Séguy and type spécimens were located
and how to find them in the muséum.
When I said I very much wanted to see Professor Séguy, Dr. Matile told me that
although Professor Séguy had been looking forward to seeing me, he was very old and
it was unlikely that he was going to corne out on a cold rainy day like today. He spent
only two to three hours at the muséum about twice a week on fine days. Hearing this,
ail I could do was to pray for a good weather for the next day. I spent the rest of my
visit studying the type spécimens I had wanted to see as well as other spécimens of flies.
I was glad as I was able to find answers to some of the unresolved questions I had had
until then.
After around 3 o'clock, a white-haired gentleman appeared breathing heavily. This
happened to be the long-awaited Professor Séguy. I was really grateful for him to hâve
taken the trouble to see me on a cold, sleety day. Having been born in 1890, he was
about 80 years old and was then Professor Emeritus of Entomology and Applied Entomo-
logy of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle. The Professor was happy to see me and
we discussed many things through the interprétation of Dr. Matile. According to Dr. Matile,
the Professor disliked being photographed and he told me that the Professor would not
agrée to hâve a picture taken even if I asked. As I had very much wanted to photograph
him and a lot of my Japanese friends had asked me to bring some pictures back, I did
not know what to do. However, I ventured to ask him to please let me take his pictures
by saying that I had long respected him and wanted to hâve his picture on my desk. The
Professor smiled and allowed me to photograph him. Later when we went to a restaurant
and a park, I took many more pictures of him. Dr. Matile was utterly surprised and asked
me to send him some pictures later.
The Professor told me that there were non-identified spécimens of Sarcophagid flies
collected by Dr. Hervé-Bazin in China and Iran and there was no specialist of Sarcopha-
