sensilla chaetica (fig. 31). On each side of the segment, they are generally found together in a common deep pit. There are no significant differences between the sexes as regards the distribution of sensilla auricillica (fig. 32).
A single uniporous sensillum appears in association with one sensillum auricillicum in most cases (fig. 13 and 31). There is no more than 2 uniporous sensilla per segment but some segments bear no sensilla (fig. 32). No significant differences exist between males and females in the total numbers or distribution of these sensilla (table I).
Sensilla coeloconica are often located on the distal edge of each segment where three or four of them form a group while some of them are isolated on the rest of the segment (fig. 31). They are not present on all segments of both sexes; 0-12 sensilla are found on each of the segments. They are generally more abundant on the distal half of the flagel- lum. We have estimated the total number of sensilla coeloconica at 528 in males and 824 in females (P < 0.05) (table I).
Generally a single sensillum styloconicum is found in the middle of the distal edge of each segment in males and females (fig. 31) but the proximal sensilla have another loca- tion (fig. 33). Certain segments are deprived of sensillum styloconicum and the apical seg- ment in both sexes bears 4-6 of these sensilla (fig. 33). The total numbers of sensilla are identical in both sexes (table I).
Five to six sensilla chaetica form a circle at the middle of each segment (fig. 31). There are 2 circles of 6 sensilla on the apical segment (fig. 23). No differences were found in the total numbers of these sensilla between males and females (table I).
The sensilla squamiformia are found among the scales on the proximal and median segments. Their numbers have not been determined.
DISCUSSION
The types of sensilla found on the antennal flagellum of N. pronuba are typical of those found on the antennae of other Lepidoptera described in the literature, as concerns
