NEW MODERNISTIC
OPERA PREMIERE
PROVES DIFFICULT
Vienna Hears 'Wozzek,'
Produced Lavishly
In 15 Scenes
g
)6 VIENNA, Mar. 31.-Alban Berg's ex.
tremely modernistlc opera "Wozzek," Ir.
^ three acts and fifteen scenes, was per-
i3 formed here at the Staatsoper for the first
— time Sunday night before a very curious:
but not entirely sympathetic audience.
ce The thème of the libretto, based on one
9 of the old master tragédies of Georg
* Buechner, Is about a simple soldier who
(kills his wife and then comm-its suicide
„ by jumping into a mountain stream be-
cause of his wife'a unfaithfulness with a
„ drum major.
The music, which ls of the earlier aton-
c. alistic school supporting the emotiona'
c. coloring of the piece, presents great dif-
- ficulties to both orchestra and singers
Theae difficultïes,. however, were met in
a. most praiseworthy manner in tonight'6
performance by the able direction of
'* Klemens Kraus and the art of Mano-
wardas and Pauly.
Nothing' that could have been done to
. give this most unusual opera the verv
best chance for success was left undone
The excellent scenery was done by Strnad
who is well known throughout Europe
and England for the beautiful effects he
obtains. In the f' ":een différent scenes
that followed rapitlly upon each other
he had ample scope to display his talents
and he achieved a result which was a de-
light to the eye.
Even Klemens Kraus, although he is
supporter of the modernistic school,
showed great courage when he decided
to include such a difficult pièce in the
repertoire of the Vienna Opera at such
an early stage in his career as director
of this institution. He haa not yet com-
pleted his first year of service. *

VOICE OF TRIBUNE READERS
PUBLICITY HUNGER STRIKERS?
To the Editor of The Tribune.
Sir:—
You discuss in a recent issue hunger-
etrikin.g'. As an old prison officiai may
I suggest that the perfect remedy is to
suppress a!l publicity. AH prisoners
admit that it is entered into to attract
attention to the individual or the cause
for which he may be imprisoned. With-
out publicity it fai,ls utterly to attain its
object.

FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE?
To the Editor of The Tribune.
Sir:
Use your influence to suppress need-
less noise.
Noise, noise, noise, noise, noise that
murders peace and poise. Noise of traf-
fic on the street, noise of midnight
tramping feet; noise of klaxons, hooters.
drills, noise of singer's maddening trills;
noi.se of ponderous, clattering vans, noise
of milkmen's rattling cans.
Noise of fiends who slam the door,
noise of the loquacious bore; noise of
' vendors lacking sense, noise of ca,ts
on neighbor's fence; noise of clicking
type machines, noise of gigglers in their
teens; noise of jangling téléphonés, noise
of dreadful saxophones.
Noise of dishes, yapping dogs, noise
of roosters, cows and hogs; noise of
radios, phonographs, noise of boisterous,
raucous laughs; noise of rusty, grind-
ing wheels, noise of sirens, pianos, peaîs:
noise of actors' rant and roar, noise
of airships when they soar.
Noise of riveters, striking docks, noise
of vacuum cleaners' shoclUl; noise of
ghostly, creaking doors, noise of lustly
sluggard's snores; noise of shunt'n?
trains at night, noise of fire-trucks that
affright; noise of ambling trams and
cars, noise of revelers after hours.
Noise, noise, noise, noise noise -hat
murders peace and poise.

Advised Drinking, Smoking
For Longevity; Died At 98
LONDON, Mar. 31.—"Live sensibly,
take a glas,s of wine or beer when you
feel like it and smoke when you want
to."
Such was the oft repeated dictum of
Dr. John Dixon, the oldest physician in
England, who died here this morning
at the age of 98. The aged doctor, who
was never sick in his life, smoked from
four- to eight cigars daily and until the
end never turned down a drink of wine
or beer.
His recipe for longevity was modéra-
tion in ail things. , "Don't have' fads.
They never did anyone any good. Fads
kill people," he frequently told his
friends. Dr. Dixon waa an ardent de.
fonder of youth and liked everyth.ng
modern except the radio, which he abo-
minated.
"I like the flapper. She is as good
as the girl of my younger days and
probably healthier," he declared re-
cently. "Some people who are old-
fashioned don't like to see girls smoke
but, believe me, it doesn't do them a bit
of harm."
Pope To Hear Outside World
By Radio, Gift Of Americans
ROME, Mar. 31.—Pope Pius XI will
soon be in independent communication
with the outside world by means of ra-
dio. Two new masts, 2,50 feet high, have
made their appearance on top of the
.Vatican Hill inside; the Pope's garden
near the covered path where he takes
his daily walk. The new wireles>s sta-
tion, which they will serve, was donated
to the Vatican by American Catholics
last summer.

(kills his wife and then comm-its suicide
„ by jumping into a mountain stream be-
cause of his wife'a unfaithfulness with a
„ drum major.
The music, which ls of the earlier aton-
c. alistic school supporting the emotiona'
c. coloring of the piece, presents great dif-
- ficulties to both orchestra and singers
Theae difficultïes,. however, were met in
a. most praiseworthy manner in tonight'6
performance by the able direction of
'* Klemens Kraus and the art of Mano-
wardas and Pauly.
Nothing' that could have been done to
. give this most unusual opera the verv
best chance for success was left undone
The excellent scenery was done by Strnad
who is well known throughout Europe
and England for the beautiful effects he
obtains. In the f' ":een différent scenes
that followed rapitlly upon each other
he had ample scope to display his talents
and he achieved a result which was a de-
light to the eye.
Even Klemens Kraus, although he is
supporter of the modernistic school,
showed great courage when he decided
to include such a difficult pièce in the
repertoire of the Vienna Opera at such
an early stage in his career as director
of this institution. He haa not yet com-
pleted his first year of service. *

VOICE OF TRIBUNE READERS
PUBLICITY HUNGER STRIKERS?
To the Editor of The Tribune.
Sir:—
You discuss in a recent issue hunger-
etrikin.g'. As an old prison officiai may
I suggest that the perfect remedy is to
suppress a!l publicity. AH prisoners
admit that it is entered into to attract
attention to the individual or the cause
for which he may be imprisoned. With-
out publicity it fai,ls utterly to attain its
object.

FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE?
To the Editor of The Tribune.
Sir:
Use your influence to suppress need-
less noise.
Noise, noise, noise, noise, noise that
murders peace and poise. Noise of traf-
fic on the street, noise of midnight
tramping feet; noise of klaxons, hooters.
drills, noise of singer's maddening trills;
noi.se of ponderous, clattering vans, noise
of milkmen's rattling cans.
Noise of fiends who slam the door,
noise of the loquacious bore; noise of
' vendors lacking sense, noise of ca,ts
on neighbor's fence; noise of clicking
type machines, noise of gigglers in their
teens; noise of jangling téléphonés, noise
of dreadful saxophones.
Noise of dishes, yapping dogs, noise
of roosters, cows and hogs; noise of
radios, phonographs, noise of boisterous,
raucous laughs; noise of rusty, grind-
ing wheels, noise of sirens, pianos, peaîs:
noise of actors' rant and roar, noise
of airships when they soar.
Noise of riveters, striking docks, noise
of vacuum cleaners' shoclUl; noise of
ghostly, creaking doors, noise of lustly
sluggard's snores; noise of shunt'n?
trains at night, noise of fire-trucks that
affright; noise of ambling trams and
cars, noise of revelers after hours.
Noise, noise, noise, noise noise -hat
murders peace and poise.

Advised Drinking, Smoking
For Longevity; Died At 98
LONDON, Mar. 31.—"Live sensibly,
take a glas,s of wine or beer when you
feel like it and smoke when you want
to."
Such was the oft repeated dictum of
Dr. John Dixon, the oldest physician in
England, who died here this morning
at the age of 98. The aged doctor, who
was never sick in his life, smoked from
four- to eight cigars daily and until the
end never turned down a drink of wine
or beer.
His recipe for longevity was modéra-
tion in ail things. , "Don't have' fads.
They never did anyone any good. Fads
kill people," he frequently told his
friends. Dr. Dixon waa an ardent de.
fonder of youth and liked everyth.ng
modern except the radio, which he abo-
minated.
"I like the flapper. She is as good
as the girl of my younger days and
probably healthier," he declared re-
cently. "Some people who are old-
fashioned don't like to see girls smoke
but, believe me, it doesn't do them a bit
of harm."
Pope To Hear Outside World
By Radio, Gift Of Americans
ROME, Mar. 31.—Pope Pius XI will
soon be in independent communication
with the outside world by means of ra-
dio. Two new masts, 2,50 feet high, have
made their appearance on top of the
.Vatican Hill inside; the Pope's garden
near the covered path where he takes
his daily walk. The new wireles>s sta-
tion, which they will serve, was donated
to the Vatican by American Catholics
last summer.
