VOICE OF TRIBUNE READERS
SEMITES AND SPIRITS.
To the Editor of The Tribune.
Sir: —
1 désire to call the attention of thosp
"wets," non-American as well as Amer-
ican, who favor beer and light wines,
but who apparently raise their hands in
horror at mention of distilled liquors, to
the fol!owing passage in the Old Testa-
ment (Deuteronomy 14:26):
"And thou shalt bestow that money
for whatsoever thy 30ul lusteth after, for
oxen. or for sheep, or for wine, or for
strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul
desireth "
In this passage the Hebrew word for
wine (yayin) is contrasted with the
Hebrew word for "strong drink" (sche-
char), and the people of Israël were per-
mitted to partake of both wine and
"strong drlnk."
1 am convinced that the "strong drink"
referred to in this passage was a distilled
liquor. If it had been merely a strong
kind of wine, it hardly would have been
sharply contrasted with wine. j
It is generally supposed that distilled
liquors were not known to the anciens.
But such a supposition cannot be prov
ed. It is also supposed that anaesthesia
is a modem discovtry. But 1 once came
across a passage in the "De Trinitate"
of Hilary of Poitiers, a writer of the
fourth century, A. D., that shows un-
mistakably that the ancients were ac-
quainted with anaesthesia. The passage
Is as follows:
"Also when through some grave neces-
sity. part of the body must be cut'away.
the soul can be lulled to sleep by drugs,
which overcome the pain and prociu<-e
in the mind a death-like forgetfulness of
its power (Jf sense. Then limbs can be
eut off without pain: the flesh ia deal
to ail feellng, and does not heed the deetl
thrust of the knife, because the soul
within it is asleep."
De Trinitate, Book X. §14
Since anaesthesia was known to the 1
ancients, as I have just shown, it is like-
ly enough that the distillation of liquors
was also known to them; and the pas-
sage from the Old Testament that 1
have quoted above goes far to confirru
this supposition.
Yours very truly.
CHARLES HOOPER.

STILL 'INQUISITIVE'
To the Editor of The Tribune.
Sir:
A few more questions for The Tribune
readers.
1. Who Ls the "genius" responsible
for the ticket distribution at the Salle
Pleyel?
2. Are apéritifs the same size now as
before the war? Or is it an opticaJ il..
lusion that makes them seern large due
to the thickness of the bottom of the
glass?
3. Is the Ameiican Hospital for Am-
erican citizens only? If 90 r-by was the
Shah of Persia. who died recently
treated there? How much money was
he worth when he died?
4. Why are those sweet young things
that act as bank clerks at a certain
American bank in Paris being rushed to
death by many American women here?
5. Galli-Curci said in a recent inter-
view that she had receive-d "only" $2,200
(half her fee in America) for an oper-
atic performance. What has been the
highest fee received by an American
singer for an operatic performance in
Europe?
6. Why does pie crust in some of the
so-called American restaurants here
seem vulcànlzed?
7. What is the praper answer to give
the pests that swoop down like vultures
in the lobby of the Palace theatre?
8. Is the telephone system here con.
sidered a success by the French people
themselves?
9. Is there any bar in Paris that even
occasionally "buya a drink on the
house?"
10. Why does one of the proprletor's
family always handle the cash in French
stores and cafés?
11. Why is the Chicago Tribune in-
creasing the price of the paper on Apr
1? Or is it merely an April First joke?
INQUISITIVE.

VOICE OF TRIBUNE READERS
SEMITES AND SPIRITS.
To the Editor of The Tribune.
Sir: —
1 désire to call the attention of thosp
"wets," non-American as well as Amer-
ican, who favor beer and light wines,
but who apparently raise their hands in
horror at mention of distilled liquors, to
the fol!owing passage in the Old Testa-
ment (Deuteronomy 14:26):
"And thou shalt bestow that money
for whatsoever thy 30ul lusteth after, for
oxen. or for sheep, or for wine, or for
strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul
desireth "
In this passage the Hebrew word for
wine (yayin) is contrasted with the
Hebrew word for "strong drink" (sche-
char), and the people of Israël were per-
mitted to partake of both wine and
"strong drlnk."
1 am convinced that the "strong drink"
referred to in this passage was a distilled
liquor. If it had been merely a strong
kind of wine, it hardly would have been
sharply contrasted with wine. j
It is generally supposed that distilled
liquors were not known to the anciens.
But such a supposition cannot be prov
ed. It is also supposed that anaesthesia
is a modem discovtry. But 1 once came
across a passage in the "De Trinitate"
of Hilary of Poitiers, a writer of the
fourth century, A. D., that shows un-
mistakably that the ancients were ac-
quainted with anaesthesia. The passage
Is as follows:
"Also when through some grave neces-
sity. part of the body must be cut'away.
the soul can be lulled to sleep by drugs,
which overcome the pain and prociu<-e
in the mind a death-like forgetfulness of
its power (Jf sense. Then limbs can be
eut off without pain: the flesh ia deal
to ail feellng, and does not heed the deetl
thrust of the knife, because the soul
within it is asleep."
De Trinitate, Book X. §14
Since anaesthesia was known to the 1
ancients, as I have just shown, it is like-
ly enough that the distillation of liquors
was also known to them; and the pas-
sage from the Old Testament that 1
have quoted above goes far to confirru
this supposition.
Yours very truly.
CHARLES HOOPER.

STILL 'INQUISITIVE'
To the Editor of The Tribune.
Sir:
A few more questions for The Tribune
readers.
1. Who Ls the "genius" responsible
for the ticket distribution at the Salle
Pleyel?
2. Are apéritifs the same size now as
before the war? Or is it an opticaJ il..
lusion that makes them seern large due
to the thickness of the bottom of the
glass?
3. Is the Ameiican Hospital for Am-
erican citizens only? If 90 r-by was the
Shah of Persia. who died recently
treated there? How much money was
he worth when he died?
4. Why are those sweet young things
that act as bank clerks at a certain
American bank in Paris being rushed to
death by many American women here?
5. Galli-Curci said in a recent inter-
view that she had receive-d "only" $2,200
(half her fee in America) for an oper-
atic performance. What has been the
highest fee received by an American
singer for an operatic performance in
Europe?
6. Why does pie crust in some of the
so-called American restaurants here
seem vulcànlzed?
7. What is the praper answer to give
the pests that swoop down like vultures
in the lobby of the Palace theatre?
8. Is the telephone system here con.
sidered a success by the French people
themselves?
9. Is there any bar in Paris that even
occasionally "buya a drink on the
house?"
10. Why does one of the proprletor's
family always handle the cash in French
stores and cafés?
11. Why is the Chicago Tribune in-
creasing the price of the paper on Apr
1? Or is it merely an April First joke?
INQUISITIVE.
