IN TIIK DKVEIiOI'MKNT AXD KK(!KNKIiATION OF J5ONÈ.* 255

plantéd and seven weeks after. there -»a not only no bone production nom either
transplant, but the periosteum had becoinKabsorbed. f

DuilAMKI.'rt SlIA'IOR RlXfJ 'ËXPEMMKXTS.

Di'hamkl placed (17!iï>) a silver ring under the periosteum in a living animal- and
fourni, some tilne after, tliat tlie ring had bVcoine eovcved by bone. He inferred froin
tliis that the periosteum secretod bone. This experiinenf is often cjuoted as a'pVoof
of tlie osteogenic power of the periosteum.

There is no doutot a bout thé fact tliat when a metallic ring which closely fits thé
shaft of a growing boue is placed undcr the periosteum, new bone will in course
of time mirround the ring. The déduction drawii therof'roni. tliat tlie periosteum
must, tberefore, bc the sow; e of tlie new bone, does nbt necessarily follow. Irritation
of a bone excites prolifcratioi' of the bone cells and tbe osteoblasts are poured out
fiom tbe Haversiaii ( 'anals on to the surface of tbe bone and till tbe interstice^ of tbe
soft t issues surrouudiiig tbe shaft, such as the loose areolar tissue existing between
tbe bone aud tbe periosteuin. In tbis wav, layers of new bone emanating froin tbe
bone itself are deposited peripberally and may soon cover a foreiga body of limited
size suwoundmg tlie bone or lving on its surface.

If this be so, would bone, denuded of its periosteum, be capable of tbrowing ont
sufKcicnt ossifie matter to clothe a metallic ring placed upon its surface '{
lt is obvions that tbe naked bone, being bereft of its periosteal blood supply, would
lose to that extent its osteoblastic regenerative power, tbough the abundant inoscu
lations of thé mimerons branches of the nutrient vessels in the interior of thé bone
niight sufKce to modify the nutrient detect of the periphery of the shaft.
In order to test this, thé following experiments were performed :–

Uog B. A Cin-le of Periosteum removed from the Eiitire Circupifevencr vf the Shaft
nf Riglit Radius and et Silvcr Ring plaçai upon the Dénudai lioiu:

Dog B had a circle of periosteum comprising -tlie whole circuniference of tbe right t
radins, and measuring half an inch in breadtb, raised "îvom about tbe middle of the
shaft. A flattened sil^er ring was made to encircle the" denuded bone at this part.
The opération was bldodless, the wound healed aseptically, without visible scar and V'
without adhèrent cicatrix. The .bbnes of the left limb are preserved foi\coniparison.
Description of the Spécimen as seen 12 weeka after. The right radius Vas covered
at tbe part that had been denuded of the periosteum wîtli a îiçw-fbrmed
counective tissue which was more firmly attached to the bone thaii that oftKe normal
periosteuçi^Qii the shaft above .and below this part, After denuding thé bo^e from
this new-formed connective tissue and from thé periosteal covering, thére was n^i trace
of thé silver ring to be seen. The shaft of thé bone was smooth ail over and ifc. the
sil ver, ring still existed, it must bave licorne enveloped in the bone. There was,
