- TABLE DES MATIERES
118 C.-L. COLLENETTE
they were collected at the same date as this species at Ampolomita, the coloration
is much darker, and there is no trace of the orange rufous on the forewing. The
position must await the collection of further specimens.
Aphomoeoma n. gen.
<$. Proboscis absent. Palpus porrect, long and easily visible from above, the
third segment one—third the length of second, smoothly haired. Antenna very long,
about half the length of costa, pectinations closely set. Abdomen shorter than
inner margin of hindwing. Legs rather sparsely haired; process of fore tibia slightly
longer than tibia, straight; mid tibia with one pair, hind tibia with two pairs of
rather long spurs of equal length. Forewing having vein 12 parallel with costa;
11 from the cell at two-thirds; a short areole with 10 from three—quarters; 8 and 9
stalked from end of areole, dividing at one—half; 7 from end of areole; 6 from upper
angle ; 3 to 5 well separated, 3 rather doser to 4 than 4 from 5 ; 2 from cell at three—
quarters; anal vein parallel with inner margin. Hindwing with vein 8 approaching
but not touching cell at one—third ; 6 and 7 on a short stalk ; 3 to 5 well separated,
equidistant; 2 from cell at three—quarters; anal veins almost straight. Frenulum
présent.
Gender. Neuter : Type species A. mesembrinum Collenette.
Aphomoeoma mesembrinum n. sp. (Pl. 2, fig. 5)
cJ. Palpus orange buff mixed with black. Antenna snuff brown. Legs ochra-
ceous buff, banded on fore and middle legs with black. Head and thorax buffy
brown, abdomen orange buff, each segment banded broadly with black. Forewing
with ground colour pale yellow orange; costal area snufî brown with four evenly
spaced black patches from base to apex; a pattern of black crenate fasciae over
the wing, see illustration; a terminal black fascia and fringe buffy brown, pale
yellow orange at tornus. Hindwing orange buff; a terminal fascia of snuff brown, this
colour extending along each vein to the subterminal area; fringe buffy brown.
Underside of both wings orange buff; the terminal and subterminal markings of
upperside reproduced below but somewhat reduced; fringes buffy brown.
Expanse. 41 mm, antenna 10.5 mm.
1 (J MADAGASCAR SUD, Bekily, (Type) (A. Seyrig).
This species is close to Dasychira in structure, but lias exceptionally long antennae
and palpi. The orange legs and abdomen are banded with black. The wing pattern,
especially on hindwing and underside of forewing, is unlike any other species in the
Lymantriidae, and the position of the genus is uncertain.
Lymantria velutina (Mabille, 1878)
The male of this species is well known. The female, which is unexpectedly
large, is now obtained for the first time. Markings in all respects resemble those of
the male.
