veins M3 and CuA1 are stalked or coïncident. Another subgroup in the Nudariini includes
many genera (such as Nudaria, Thumatha, Miltochrista,...) and is based on the followmg apo-
morphy : the larval segments A3-A6 possess a single verruca (L2) between the spiracle and the
proleg. Within this subgroup, at least two genera - Thumatha and Miltochrista - are united by
the common possession, on the larval segments T3 and A7, of a large eversible gland between
verrucae D and SD.
Endrosini Börner, 1932
Type-genus : Endrosa Hübner, [1819] (a subjective synonym of Setina Schrank, 1802).
Diagnosis. - Imago relatively large to small, with broad or fairly broad forewings, which are
often ornamented with transverse rows of dark dots (then with the dots of the ante- and postmedial rows
mostly situated on the veins) (fig. 14). Wingspan : 16-48 mm. Head : ocelli vestigial to absent; compound
eyes fairly large to small (largerin maies than in females); antennae simple, with well developed sensilla
chaetica (that are conspicuous in maies, though sometimes somewhat hidden among long sensilla tricho-
dea); scape rather short; flagellum usually more or less moniliform in ventral view, after removal of the
(dorsal) scales; frontoclypeus scales directed ventrad, ventro-mesad or ventro-laterad, and varying from
short and appressed to elongate (roughly piliform) and loose; pilifers variously developed; proboscis fair-
ly to very short, measuring less than four times length of compound eye "vertical diameter"; distal sec-
tion of the proboscis basically provided with a row of moderately long, carinate, sensilla styloconica (e.g.
in Stigmatophora rhodophila (Walker, [1865])), but devoid of such sensilla in Setina (BORNER, 1932 : fig.
736a); labial palpi relatively long to very short, upturned, porrect or drooping, either 3- or 2-segmented
(terminal segment rather long primarily). Tegula short or fairly short, i.e. not reaching the base of the
anterior edge of the posterior mesonotal wing process. Mesothoracic precoxal suture : "lower" sector long
to fairly short; "upper" sector absent. Metascutum divided or with a narrow médian région, which is either
not produced anteriorly or just provided with a vestigial, ill-defined, anterior lobe. Metepisternum conspi-
cuously swollen (sexually dimorphic in Setina, i.e. markedly enlarged in males), with about 4-20 (long
to short) thin, lateral, microtymbals, but without secondary strigae caudad of - or between - the micro-
tymbals. Tympanum more or less "vertical", with its frame either broadly open antero-laterally
(Stigmatophora Staudinger, 1881 : fig. 99 in DANIEL, 1955) or scarcely open, though not entirely closed
(Setina : figs 5 and 6 in KIRIAKOFF, 1951); conjunctiva either fairly small or absent; nodular sclerite
absent, sometimes replaced by a thin line that is not internally raised; counter-tympanum varying from
well developed, roughly as extensive as the tympanum, to vestigial, practically absent; ventral edge of the
scutal phragma distinctly convex, though not strongly produced. "Metathoracic "laterophragmata squat,
directed cephalad. Legs smooth-scaled; cuticle of midleg meron without distinct strigae; hindfemora
sometimes markedly thickened distally (in most Setina). Epiphysis present; tibial spurs long to short,
numbering 0-2-4. Tarsi spined ventrally. Pretarsus : arolium present; pulvilli distincdy of obtectomeran
type; claws either simple (Setina) or provided with a squat ventral tooth, the edges of which are approxi-
mately at right angles. Wing vestiaire opaque in Stigmatophora, somewhat translucent in Setina, whose
scales tend to be semi-erect and narrowed or reduced in size. Hindwing dorsal surface : loose piliform
scales present proximally, often from the anal region to the upper area of the discal cell. Forewing : vein
R free or anastomosing with Sc; areole absent; Rsl free; Rsl stalked with Rs3; Rs4 distinctly stalked with
either Rs2 + 3 (e.g. SPULER, 1910 : fig. 47) or M1 (figs 328 and 404 in HAMPSON, 1900); Ml and M3 sepa-
rate, though approximate, or connate, or even - occasionally - very shortly stalked; M3 and CuAl clear-
ly separate, the latter arising however doser to the former than to CuA2 (the base of which is situated
approximately in the middle of discal cell lower edge, or only a little farther distad). Hindwing : female
frenulum composed of 3-7 bristles; subcosta proximally fused with the upper edge of the discal cell
(except, primarily, at the very base of the cell), then diverging at, or distad of, the first third of this edge
(often beyond edge middle); Rs and M1 basically stalked, rarely connate; Ml and M3 typically stalked,
sometimes coïncident, occasionally - in certain specimens of Stigmatophora micans (Bremer & Grey,
1853) - connate or very slightly separated; CuAl free, sometimes connate with Ml + 3; CuA2 remote
from CuA1, arising near, or beyond, middle of discal cell lower edge; vein 3A fairly to very long.
Thoraco-abdominal intersegmental membrane sometimes forming a projecting lobe midventrally.
Abdomen : tympanal hoods présent, shallow and prespiracular; tergal rim opening either posterior, in
ventral position, or strictly ventral; median sclerite of dorsum 1 entire, mesally broad or fairly broad; A1
without a distinct tergopleural sclerite, although the posterior part of the marginotergite may be enlarged
laterally; antecostal phragma of tergum 2 narrow or interrupted mesally and only weakly produced late-
rally; A2 with the tergal rods well indicated, typically long, the dorsal tubercula situated on the tergal
veins M3 and CuA1 are stalked or coïncident. Another subgroup in the Nudariini includes
