Taking into account these different apomorphies, we propose to allocate the following
generic names to the Cisthenini : Aemene Walker, 1854 (subj. syn. of Siccia), Anatolmis
Packard, 1864 (subj. syn. of Lycomorpha), Arhabdosia Dyar, 1905 (Rp, Hw), Ascaptesyle
Dyar, 1905 (Hw), Autoceras Felder, 1874 (subj. syn. of Siccia), Barsinella Butler, 1878 (An,
Fw), Byssophaga Stretch, 1872 (subj. syn. of Cisthene), Callisthenia Hampson, 1900 (Rp, An,
Fw), Chrysozana Hampson, 1900 (An), Cisthene Walker, 1854 (Se, Rp, An), Clemensia
Packard, 1864 (Se, Mt, Co), Dolichesia Schaus, 1911 (Hw), Euthyone Watson, 1980 (Rp),
Hypermaepha Hampson, 1900 (Rp, Hw), Hypoprepia Hübner, [1831] (Se), Hyposiccia
Hampson, 1900 (Mt, Co), Illice Walker, 1859 (subj. syn. of Cisthene), Leucorhodia Hampson,
1900 (Hw [unlike HAMPSON'S fig. 265]), Lycomorpha Harris, 1839 (Se, Hw), Lycomorphodes
Hampson, 1900 (Hw), Maepha Walker, 1864 (An), Metallosia Hampson, 1900 (At), Neotalara
Hampson, 1914 (Hw), Neothyone Hampson, 1914 (Fw), Odozona Walker, [1865] (Rp, At),
Ozodania Dyar, 1899 (subj. syn. of Cisthene), Panassa Walker, 1865 (subj. syn. of Siccia),
Parasiccia Hampson, 1900 (Se, Mt, Co), Prepiella Schaus, 1899 (Rp, An, Fw), Pronola
Schaus, 1899 (Mt, Co; closely related to Clemensia), Pyralidia Felder, 1974 (subj. syn. of
Cisthene), Repa Walker, 1866 (subj. syn. of Clemensia), Rhabdatomis Dyar, 1907 (Rp),
Seripha Walker, 1854 (An), Siccia Walker, 1854 (Se, Mt, Co), Talara Walker, 1866 (Hw), Uxia
Walker, 1866 (subj. syn. of Clemensia), Zonoda Schaus, 1896 (subj. syn. of Cisthene).
According to KITCHING & RAWLINS ([1998] : 391), the larvae of Nodozana Druce, 1899
("Nodozama ", misspelhng), are also devoid of verrucae (Se), but this genus may not be mono-
phyletic and whether this statement does apply to the type-species clearly deserves to be chec-
ked precisely.
Geographical range. - A mainly New World group, with at least a few representatives
in the Old World (not in Europe, however) : Siccia, Hyposiccia and Parasiccia.
Discussion. - This new tribe is based on a single autapomorphy, namely the loss of the
larval verrucae. Its monophyly may then seem rather weakly supported, but it should be noted
that the apomorphy in question is rare in the Arctiidae (KITCHING & RAWLINS, [1998] : 391)
and not known to occur in any other member of the Lithosiinae (Phryganopteryx larvae remain
however unknown). In the family that we regard as sister to the arctiids, viz. the Lymantriidae,
the larvae are apparently always provided with verrucae. Other apomorphies are invariably pre-
sent in the Cisthenini, in particular the loss of discrete nodular sclerites (in tympanal organs)
and the absence of forewing areoles. Nevertheless, they also occur in other tribes : the former
belongs to the ground plans of the Eudesmiini (possible sister group of Cisthenini) and
Endrosini; the latter is more widely distributed, as mentioned further on (see discussion about
Nudariini). The hindwing discal cell is (dorsally) devoid of loose piliform scales in most
Cisthenini, but this apomorphy cannot be ascribed to the ground plan of the tribe, being clear-
ly absent from the genus Hypoprepia.
Most cisthenine genera show, at the adult stage, an unusual resting posture, the anten-
nae being directed forwards or both forwards and laterad. This behavioural apomorphy ("Rp"
in the above list) can be used for defining a subtribe : the Cistheniti. On the other hand, the
genera Clemensia, Pronola, Siccia, Hyposiccia, and Parasiccia will be placed in the
Clemensiiti subtrib. nov. (type-genus : Clemensia Packard, 1864). The Clemensiiti have a ple-
siomorphic resting posture with regard to the antennae and are characterized by at least three
apomorphies : presence of a pair of metascutal membranous areas ("Mt"), sternum A2 with
curved, moveable anterolateral processes, and female abdomen provided with a corethrogvne
("Co").
Nudariini Borner, 1920
Type-genus : Nudaria Haworth, [1809].
Diagnosis. - Imago large to small, with broad to fairly narrow forewings (that may show well
indicated ante- and postmedial lines) (fig. 13). Wingspan : 12-64 mm. Head : ocelli absent or extremely
