Lithosiinae main lineages ...
Included genera. - The type-genus was long called, erroneously, Cisthene Walker,
1854 (for the correct type-species of Cisthene, see WATSON et al, 1980 : 40). The following
genenc names represent indisputable Eudesmiini : Eudesmia Hübner, [1823], Euryptidia
Hampson, 1900, Gerba Walker, [1865] (subjective synonym of Eudesmia), Josiodes Felder,
1874, Paratype Felder, 1874, Ruscino Walker, 1854 (subj. syn. of Eudesmia), and Vianania
Orfila, 1954 (subj. syn. of Eudesmia).
Geographical range.- A New World, mainly neotropical group.
Discussion. - The Eudesmiini share with the Nudariini and most Cisthenini a plesio-
morphic type of sternum A2, which shows long apodemes and firmly fixed anterolateral pro-
cesses (i.e. fused with the sternum). By contrast, the Phryganopterygini, Endrosini and
Lithosiini have reduced apodemes and their anterolateral processes are more or less distinctly
articulated with the sternal plate (as in all non-lithosiine arctiids : BENDIB & MINET, 1998 :
1010). Moreover, the Eudesmiini do not possess the larval characteristics of the Cisthenini and
Nudariini.
The bicoloured wings, with contrasting black/brown and orange/orange-yellow areas, is
an obvious autapomorphy of the Eudesmiini. If one disregards Acsala, a morphologically poor-
ly known genus, at least four other traits may be regarded as eudesmiine autapomorphies : the
scutal phragma is neither produced nor convex ventrally; there are no distinct (i.e. concave)
tympanal hoods; in the female, sternum A7 is small, mainly membranous, and anteriorly flan-
ked by two conspicuous concave sclerites; the corpus bursae possesses an elongate signum,
with parallel edges, which is scobinate only, or more distinctly, on the periphery.
Cisthenini trib. nov.
Type-genus : Cisthene Walker, 1854.
Diagnosis. -Imago usually brightly coloured and small or very small, sometimes dull and/or fair-
ly large (figs 10-12); forewing varying from broad to relatively narrow, and often ornamented with a red
spot on the discocellulars. Wingspan : 12-40 mm. Head : ocelli vestigial to absent; compound eyes usual-
ly large (especially in maies), occasionally provided with conspicuous interommatidial setae (in certain
species of Euthyone Watson, 1980); antennae simple to bipectinate (occasionally bipectinate in the fema-
le), sometimes with transverse ventral projections at the flagellomeres; dorsal region of the flagellum often
thickly scaled proximally and sometimes with a distinctive, light-coloured subapical section; antennal sen-
silla chaetica usually well developed, often conspicuous; frontoclypeus rather smooth, with its scales
directed ventrad or, occasionally, ventro-mesad or mesad (this last arrangement is rare but occurs in, e.g.,
Prepiella radicans Hampson, 1905); frontoclypeus vestiture sometimes hiding proboscis base and pilifers;
the latter usually well developed, rarely lost; proboscis varying from long to very short, showing distally
- in its ground plan - a number of elongate, carinate, sensilla styloconica (often few and somewhat redu-
ced); labial palpi fairly long to strongly reduced, upturned, porrect or drooping, usually with 3 segments
(occasionally 2-segmented) (terminal segment long to short). Tegula sometimes fairly long, i.e. reaching
approximately the base of anterior edge of the posterior mesonotal wing process, e.g. as in Siccia sordida
(Butler, 1877), but usually shorter. Mesothoracic precoxal suture : "lower" sector long; "upper" sector
typically well indicated and ending near the anapleural cleft, though sometimes practically absent or
ending far from this cleft. Mesal region of the metascutum primarily present, rather narrow, and provided
with a well defined, anteriorly projecting lobe; mesal region and/or its lobe sometimes lost. Metascutum
sometimes provided with distinct, posterolateral, membranous areas (Clemensia Packard, 1864, Pronola
Schaus, 1899, Siccia Walker, 1854, Hyposiccia Hampson, 1900, Parasiccia Hampson, 1900).
Metepisternum moderately to conspicuously swollen, usually provided - laterally - with 8-30, long to
short, thin microtymbals (= primary grooves of FORBES & FRANCLEMONT, 1957); microtymbals often obli-
quely ascending anteriorly, sometimes also ascending in the posterior region of the episternum, where they
may be intermixed with numerous, close-set strigae (e.g. Clemensia albata Packard, 1864, and several
Cisthene; see in particular FORBES, 1960). Tympanal organ without a genuine conjunctiva (the "conjonc-
tive" of KIRIAKOFF (1951 : 61, 65) is not of epimeral origin); tympanum "vertical" or more or less oblique;
nodular sclerite absent, replaced by a weak "shadow" and/or a dorsally directed extension of the tympa-
nal frame (in certain species, such as "Talara" ditis (Butler, 1878), the trame appears practically "closed" :
