Lithosiinae main lineages 245
The genus Afrida Möschler, 1886, was long held in the Lithosiinae (e.g. FRANCLEMONT,
1983, who suggested however a possible transfer to the "Noctuidae" : p. XVIII). Recently
[1998], KITCHING & RAWLINS removed it from the Arctiidae, placing it in a new subfamily -
Afridinae - within the Nolidae. They insisted - rightly - on the absence of the apomorphies
that normally characterize the Arctiidae. We add that Afrida species have rather inconspicuous
sensilla chaetica to their antennae, unlike the normal lymantriid/arctiid condition, and may
have most forewing scales provided with 6-7 apical teeth, whereas small-sized arctiids always
possess wing scales with fewer teeth.
II. - THE TRIBES, LITHOSIINI EXCEPTED
Phryganopterygini trib. nov.
Type-genus : Phryganopteryx Saalmüller, 1884.
Diagnosis. - Imago large, with moderately broad to fairly narrow forewings, which are scattered
with dark dots or streaks, mainly arranged along the veins (fig. 8); abdomen brightly coloured, usually
with three longitudinal rows of dark spots. Wingspan : 35-72 mm. Head : ocelli present, well developed;
compound eyes rather large; antennae bipectinate in Phryganopteryx pauliani Toulgoët, 1971 (rami fair-
ly short in female; maie unknown), simple in the other species; antennae with fairly well developed sen-
silla chaetica; head vestiture frequently roughened, especially on the frontoclypeus; scales of the latter
directed dorsad or mesad, or even, occasionally, ventro-mesad (scales somewhat loose in this case); pili-
fers well developed, with numerous bristles; proboscis rather strong, apically provided with moderately
long to distinctly elongate, carinate, sensilla styloconica; labial palpi relatively well developed, 3-seg-
mented, more or less distinctly upturned, with short to moderately long terminal segment. Tegula rarely
long, usually not reaching (after removal of scales) the concave basai part of the anterior edge of the pos-
terior mesonotal wing process. Mesothoracic precoxal suture (terminology of BROCK, 1971) : "lower"
sector long, reaching the anapleural cleft; upper sector present, though rather inconspicuous. Metascutum
laterally provided with conspicuous tufts of long piliform scales; its median region vestigial/lost, except
for a well developed, trapezoidal or rectangular, discrete mesal sclerite. Metepistemum basically showing
a row of numerous short, parallel, faintly indicated microtymbals (these are often absent, their initial loca-
tion being then just revealed by a row of close-set narrow scales); posterior half of the episternum smooth,
normally scaled. Tympanum and conjunctiva separated by a well defined nodular sclerite. "Metathoracic"
laterophragmata laminate, folded cephalad. Male foreleg sometimes thickened with petiolate androconial
scales. Mid- and hindtibiae smooth-scaled, without spines; epiphysis of moderate length; tibial spurs
(long to short) : 0-2-4. Tarsi distinctly spined. Pretarsus : arolium well developed; dorsal region of the
pulvillus angulate, with long, setiform outgrowths; claws with a ventral tooth, which is usually sharply
pointed, although its edges define a weakly acute angle (above 45°) in P. pauliani. Hindwing dorsal sur-
face showing, in addition to lamellar scales, numerous loose piliform scales scattered between the anal
margin and the upper region of the discal cell. Forewing : vein R never anastomosing with Sc, arising
from areole in P. pauliani, from discal cell in the other species; areole present, usually markedly elonga-
te; Rsl, Rs2 + 3 and Rs4 always arising from the areole (Rs1 usually free but stalked with Rs2 + 3 in P.
pauliani; Rs2 either free, or stalked with stem Rs2 + 3); M1 free; M2 and M3 approximate, connate or
short-stalked; M3 and CuA1 separate, though basally rather close to each other; CuA2 basally remote
from CuAl, arising from the distal half of the lower edge of the discal cell (either near the middle of this
edge, or farther distad). Hindwing : female frenulum composed of 3-4 bristles; subcosta and discal cell
upper edge separate basally, then anastomosing for a short distance (sometimes just sharing a punctiform
contact at the first third of the edge in question : certain specimens of P. pauliani) and usually diverging
before the middle of this edge; Rs and Ml either strongly approximate/connate (e.g. as in P. pauliani) or
short-stalked; M2 and M3 approximate, connate or stalked; M3 and CuAl varying from separate (though
approximate) to short-stalked (or perhaps entirely fused : in a few species having lost one "M" vein);
CuA2 free, arising beyond, though often near, middle of discal cell lower edge; vein 3A long (exceeding
e.g. three quarters length of 1A + 2A in Phryganopteiyx formosa Toulgoët, 1959). Abdomen : tympanal
hoods well defined, fairly small, supraspiracular; tergal rim {sensu BROCK, 1971) with a rounded,
medium-sized, posterior opening in central or dorsal position; posteromedian sclerite of dorsum 1 weak-
ly pigmented, narrow, entire; postspiracular tergopleural sclerite absent or somewhat reduced and practi-
cally unpigmented; antecostal phragma of tergum 2 narrow to moderately broad in the meson; tergal rods
of A2 long to short; A2 with the ventral and dorsal tubercula situated on the pleural membrane, the dor-
sal ones being usually adjacent to the tergum; anterolateral processes of sternum 2 distinctly articulated
