- When dealing with standard generalized constitutive relations involving an internal variable and its gradient, the outstanding difficulty is the lack of independence of the state variables. It can be overcome by extending the constitutive relations to the whole domain in such a way that the Clausius-Duhem inequality is ensured in the wide sense. Then, a variational principle is proposed to solve the initial value problem in an incremental fashion.

- We develop a theory of material uniformity for Cosserat surfaces in a geometrical setting. The homogeneity condition is characterized by means of two inhomogeneity tensors.

- A tissue composed of elastic fibres displays behaviour in tension which is far from linear. The initial, effective, elastic modulus is very low and it is only at larger strains that rigidity increases. We model this behaviour using the elastic energy stored in the fibres, treated as beams. Experiments effected with a glass, woven tissue show good agreement with the theory.

- We give in this Note a sufficient condition for a spherically symmetric potential to have at least one bound state with a given angular momentum. This condition, which assumes the potential to be purely attractive (negative), and increasing (non-decreasing), gives very good results in all cases studied here (exponential potential, Gaussian, Yukawa, etc.). It is also optimal in the sense that it gives the exact result for a square-well in the S-wave.

- A set of chemical compounds has been discovered which are able to fight against the proliferation of the AIDS virus, thanks to a phenomenon of synergy. The first of these molecules are inhibitors of the reverse transcriptase. They must be used together to fight against resistant virions. The most recent are inhibitors of a viral protease and must be brought in along with the first ones.

- The previously proposed syntopy model, which provides a continuous extension of the symmetry concept for quasi-symmetric structures, is used to quantify the symmetry resemblance of the transition state to the initial and final states in chemical reactions. Cis-trans isomerization of molecules of type XYC-CYX is presented as an example, and the membership functions of the transition state relative to the symmetry domains defined by the cis-and trans-structure point groups are related to the corresponding Brönsted coefficients.

- A sample of the 36 nearest galactic Cepheids was measured with the HIPPARCOS satellite and supplied us with high precision geometrical parallaxes and accurate photometric data. These data are tested against ground based observations and used to determine the first "geometrical" calibration of the period-luminosity relation for nearby Cepheids. This relation is used to determine the distance of the galaxy IC4182 ( = 28.23 0.07).
