NEW LAW OF SERIES SPECTRA. .o~A~c~ ~OM~a/, Vo). XXVUt, No. 3, October .908, p. 23~-243.
This communication is intended to show how we may derive from the known spectral séries of an element, new series which represent accurateiy, without the inclusion of any new constant, nearly aH of the series and lines recently discovered by Lenard, Konen, Hagenbach, Saunders, Moll, Ramage, and Bergmann. Thé new principle of combination also finds application to other spectra, particuhirtv to helium and the earth alkalies. Closerrelationships to the atomic weight than have been known hitherto are also furnished. In its most conveniènt form, thé series formula proposed by mereads('):
(.) ~=A–
[/M -)- Cf -t- P(A – v)J~'
where v is thé wave-number referred to vacuum, N is auniversal constant, nx thé nierai, and A thé limit of the series; a and 3 are constants. For small values of m, v may become négative, which must be taken into account in the term 8(A-~). Thé constants c< and characterize the course of thé séries they are identical for two séries with constant differences.
